weather has cooled down.

In late August, plenty of beans, baby corn, cucumbers, beets and zucchini were being harvested. Our first tomatoes were ready to pick the last week of August.

The first 2 weeks of September have been cold. A half peck of cherry tomatoes , and a half peck of Brandywine, Oxheart and Better Boy tomatoes are ripe. The honeydew vine died. The watermelons are not ripe yet.

Picked a half dozen zucchini, and a couple litres of fava beans and cucumbers. Okra didn’t produce over the first two weeks of September. Carrots are growing slowly.

Arugula, cilantro, basil and radishes that were planted on May 5, 2011 are being harvested from the cold frame. Tomatoes are blossoming, and there are half a dozen peppers growing on the pepper plant that was planted on May 5. Eggplants are not doing well in the cold frame this year. Garlic is doing well.

Black currants are ready to be picked.

Planted small plot, including bok choi, carrots, beets, long beans, haricots verts, turnips, favas, spinach, endive, baby corn on June 20, 2011. Also planted cucumbers, zucchini, melons., which I’ll transplant later. Planted 15 red and 10 white potatoes.

Planted habaneros, jalapenos, brandywine, oxheart, 1 watermelon plant and 25 potatoes (4 white, 15 red fingerlings, 8 blue fingerlings), honeydew, muskmelon, sweet hungarian pepper, sweet banana pepper, tomatillo, cumin, endive, spinach, nantes carrots, black beauty eggplants, tumbling tom’s tomatoes, beets, favas.

Transplanted cucumbers, and summer squash.

Montreal melons planted on June 20 did not germinate.

So far, I’ve purchased some edamame, okra, baby corn, and fava seeds. We had 2 inches of snowfall yesterday.

The rhubarb has started to emerge, but I probably won’t be harvesting any until next week. This time last year, I was already baking rhubarb crisps.

The parsley in the cold frame has started to grow new stems and leaves.

Looks like I won’t be planting anything until Victoria Day weekend.

things to remember for garden 2011

plant tomatillos and ground cherries in wide open spaces. they’ll take over small gardens

pick carrots as soon as they are the size you like, rather than leaving them in the ground. Where I live, if they’re left in the ground, cutworms dig in, and once they do, the rest of the carrot develops a “dirt” smell. Pick beets sooner than later, too.

plant mint, thyme, and other aromatics in corners of garden to keep ants away

don’t plant tomatillos or zucchinis near onions, garlic or beans. They’ll crowd out the weaker plants.

plant only 2 cucumber mounds, and plant another mound a month later, so they don’t come all at once.

plant cucumber and tomatillos far apart, and not near okra. They’ll climb the okra, hurting the plant.

plant no more than 1 roma tomato plant, and maybe none.

cylindrica beets, and stupice tomatoes are good ones in our garden.

plant spinach, dill and cilantro frequently, since they mature quickly.

only plant turnips in cool weather, or they become too sharp

arugula grows better in the coldframe than at the farm
